Tremors
1990 · Directed by Ron Underwood
Two handymen in a desert town discover giant underground worms are eating everybody. Kevin Bacon. Reba with a shotgun. Cinematic perfection.
Why It's Cult
Tremors is the platonic ideal of the creature feature — short, funny, self-aware without being smug, and genuinely tense when it needs to be. Bacon and Fred Ward's chemistry carries the whole thing. Michael Gross's survivalist Burt is one of cinema's great supporting turns. Spawned a franchise nobody asked for. The original still rules.
The Plot, Officially
A small town gradually becomes aware of a strange creature which picks off people one by one. But what is this creature, and where is it? At the same time, a seismologist is working in the area, she detects _tremors_. The creature lives underground, and can 'pop up' without warning. Trapped in their town, the town-folk have no escape.
