Cool Runnings
1993 · Directed by Jon Turteltaub
Four Jamaican sprinters make the 1988 Olympic bobsled team because their qualifying race went sideways. Loosely true. Profoundly quotable. John Candy's last great role.
Why It's Cult
Cool Runnings is the rare Disney sports movie that earned its own catch-phrase economy. Doug E. Doug's "Sanka, ya dead?" check-in. The egg-hatching motivational. The four-man push at the end. John Candy as a disgraced coach finding redemption was his last great role — he died the following year. It plays in heavy cable rotation thirty years later because nobody's made anything more rewatchable.
The Plot, Officially
Four Jamaicans form their country's first ever bobsled team to compete in the upcoming 1988 Winter Olympics. They enlist the help of a disgraced former Olympic gold winner to reluctantly coach them. However, when they reach Canada they're treated as outsiders by the other teams, who fear they'll only succeed in embarrassing the sport.
