Broken Arrow
1996 · Directed by John Woo
Travolta steals two nuclear bombs from a B-2 and Christian Slater hunts him through the desert. John Woo directing in America before he figured out it wasn't Hong Kong.
Why It's Cult
Broken Arrow is the John Woo film that announced he was here, before Face/Off the next year did the actual announcing. Travolta is having a blast as the villain — same year he played the bad guy three other times. Slater never better. The Hummer-vs-helicopter chase. The mineshaft. The line "Would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapons?" is the whole nineties summarized.
The Plot, Officially
"Broken Arrow" is the term used to describe a nuclear device that has been lost. In this movie, two nuclear missiles are stolen by rogue US pilot Deakins, but hot on his trail is his co-pilot Hale and a Park Ranger, Terry. The action takes place in Utah's canyon country; a high stakes game of cat and mouse.
