The Count of Monte Cristo
2002 · Directed by Kevin Reynolds
A man wrongfully imprisoned for thirteen years gets out, finds a fortune, and spends the next decade ruining everyone who put him there. Revenge-cinema comfort food.
Why It's Cult
The 2002 Monte Cristo is a rewatch engine. It's not an important film but it's a deeply satisfying one — Caviezel and Guy Pearce are having the exact opposite good time on screen, and Pearce's Mondego is a villain you want to see get it. Dumas's plot bulletproofs almost any adaptation, and this is the most watchable version.
The Plot, Officially
'The Count of Monte Cristo' is an adaptation of the Alexander Dumas tale by the same name. Dantes, a sailor who is falsely accused of treason by his best friend Fernand, who wants Dantes' girlfriend Mercedes for himself.
