Top Gun: Maverick
2022 · Directed by Joseph Kosinski
Thirty-six years later. The same character. Real planes. Real Cruise stunts. The movie that briefly saved theatrical exhibition.
Why It's Cult
Maverick had no business working — a legacy sequel to a Reagan-era propaganda film, made during a pandemic, anchored by a sixty-year-old action star. It works. It works because Cruise refused to let it not work — actual jets, actual G-forces, actual practical effects. Joseph Kosinski directs the flying scenes with a clarity that's been missing from action cinema for twenty years. The dad-bone within you will not survive the third act.
The Plot, Officially
Set 30 years after its predecessor, it follows Maverick's return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (also known as U.S. Navy-Fighter Weapons School - "TOPGUN"), where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger pilots, among them the son of Maverick's deceased best friend Lieutenant Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, USN.
